When you go to the grocery store...?
I walked to the grocery store this evening and bought 100 dollars worth of groceries (and for once it is enough to get me by for at least a month maybe). What are some things that you skimp on in order to save a penny. I will skimp on just about every thing, but when it comes to meat, cleaning products from dish soap to shampoo, and kitty litter I look for a good price or coupons. I buy in bulk when I can.
We've signed up with our local grocery store, that means that we get their ads in our e-mail, but we also get 5% off the prize every other month. I'm also a self scanner costumer and that means I get 10% off the prize every other month. 5 or 10% isn't much but it's worth some if you use it when you bulk up. The store also add up all the coupons from the store on our member card so that we don't have to do the "paper work". I love that. But I still look out for coupons from outer sources of course.
We buy the meat from the farmer. Better meat (free range), incredible prize, but more work since we have to take care of it ourselves, and we need an extra freezer to store it for a couple of months. As an example: In the store we can't even get the cheapest veal for under 7€ per kilo, at the farmers we pay 3€ for all, including parts that would cost us 10€ and more at the store.
The same goes for vegetables, berries and fruit. It's great to get it at the farm, it's organic, we know where it grew and how it was treated and it costs us less than non-organic veggies cost at the store. It's more work of course but I don't mind anymore, I have plenty of time.
I often buy things that has the prize put down because of the "best before" date. Things will last beyond the date and I have that extra freezer where I can put things if needed. I get many things for less than half the price and there is nothing wrong with them.
Many more expensive cleaning products cost more in the store but lasts longer once you get home, so that's how I save my money on that. If you buy the cheap stuff you are most likely paying for a lot of water too.
People do on the other hand use more than they should of the expensive brands. I see it clearly with my mother, she buys the cheap stuff, and when she's at my home helping out she overdose just about everything.
The only thing I won't skimp on is cheese, my husband can't live without his brand name ketchup and the kids want coca-cola for the weekends.
I started to plan our shopping better a couple of years ago and cut away 1/3 of the cost simply by planning the shopping and bulking. This year I've been even stricter and I've cut away even more. My next plan is to try to convince my husband and kids to give up some of their "have to" things or at least cut down. (We're facing a loss of 1/3 of our yearly income so something have to change for us to be able to manage.)
